Anthony Hazell is coming from South Africa. He lefts school wanting to be a biology teacher, but soon realised he was more interested in the biology than the teaching part. He got most of the way through doing a Masters in Zoology before getting too distracted by his new job – in political communication.
He started out as the then-DP’s webmaster and internal communications officer, before being seconded to the Cape Town election campaign team as a media officer at the end of 2000 – after the formation of the Democratic Alliance. He then became Media Officer for the Leader of the Opposition in 2001, Head of Parliamentary Communication at the end of 2002, and Communications Director in 2004.
Anthony currently heads up a department known as the Relationship Management Unit, which is responsible for direct marketing to, and interaction with, voters and other stakeholders.
I met Anthony at Gummersbach, Germany in our Political Communication in the IT age seminar, organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation on December 2007.
